Masterworks of the Treat Street Photo Boof

Halloween 06 - 50.jpg

There's nothing like a low-key, unplanned Halloween night, and ending it with a visit to the Treat Street photo booth.

I went in military garb: a pilots coat and hat, 2-stars on my breast, serious sunglasses, snappy tie - I dunno what i was, but Julio said I was scary. Must have been the black leather gloves. Julio was a Brooklyn-errand-boy-turned-mobster, Tiffany was the Lady in Black and Tim was an average bloke of hte IRA (black ski mask and all).

Most T-Shirts worn at one time.

this one is definitely for the superaverage pages. One man, 155 t-shirts. And an absolutely perfect video to show the process.

Sunday Bloody Sunday By Bush

Someone has taken words from thousands of Bush speeches and mashed them together so he actually sings U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday. As seen on Break.com

Adobe Space Monkey

Adobe jokes harsh my mello. I found an easter egg while eopening PhotoShop CS2, as it was starting up instead of the normal screen it said "Adobe Space Monkey". It felt like a hack, andI was kinda freaked, but apparently others have expereinced it too. Like this guy:

Powers Of Ten

If you have never seen Powers of 10, you need to now.

Charles and Ray Eames are among the finest designers of the 20th century. They are best known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing. The legacy of this husband and wife team includes more than 75 films that reflect the breadth and depth of their interests. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out, until our own galaxy is visible only as a speck of light among many others. Returning to earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward--into the hand of the sleeping picnicker--with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.

Whoa. Diet Coke and Mentos

By now everyone has heard of this unbelieveable reaction between diet coke and mentos. I've just discoverd all the people making videos of it. First this one to demo a simple test in a bath tub.
mentos + diet coke/pepsi explosion (Google Video)
... WOW, What a reaction! Such a powerful, volitile and mysterious combination of everyday objects that had lay dormant, just beneath the surface, until now...

Then, like many other exceptional discoveries, some intrepid others took it to extremes...
The Extreme Way To Do the Diet Coke Mentos Thing. (Google Video)
... That's awesome guys.

And then the most impressive of them all. The phenomanon has become a fantastic artform worth of magestic sports arenas or opera houses. The video below uses only Diet Coke and Mentos.

Nice job EepyBird! Check out EepyBird's site.

Crazy Video

A great song coupled with an equally great video. The sum is definitely greater than it's parts. Despite my resistance to bandwagoning on mainstream music, the instant I heard the song it became a favorite. There is no wonder why it's played everywhere. It's sure to be a re-recorded instrumental for Muzak.

The song ponders the motives our our lives and all the complexities that lead to some murky waters. In the video Rorschach inkblots morph hypnotically with images of the artist embedded within them. Simply by watching, the viewer becomes the subject tested for sanity, as we demons, angels, insects, and more....

The Second Dot.Coming

The dot com frenzy that gripped the world during the turn of the millineum flipped the world upside down. Start up businesses sprang up in every crevice possible. For some reason the majority had silly random names lbased on a formula of [Adjective]+[Noun] (i.e.: red gorilla, venture frogs, etc.) Thye all paid insane rents, offered killer benefits and salaries, and treatedclients with red carpet luxuries. And they could do this, because they were pulling more money than God. Well, nobody knew how it was goin to end. Some believed it had the potential to never end, those are the ones that lost everything. Others, were skeptics, or cautious, but most (I'm guessing) just went along with it until the "party" (as it was so often called) was over. That was me. It didn't last long. How could it. San Francisco being at the top of Silicone Valley, swelled with growth utill 40% of the city's economy was from the tech industry (or so I'm told). On average, other cities had 15% of their ecomony from the tech biz. So for SF, this meant a long long way to fall, and the "economic slowdown" aka the recession we are just pulling through was a significant Depression for SF. The crash was in 2001, and I'm still hearing of layoff's around the city in 2006.

But as far I can tell, it's here again. That's right, the dot comming are back. Depending on your perspective news like this might conjure up images of a terminal patient making an amazing recovery, or, ahem, of cockroaches that won't die. It's very possible that both cases are happening simultaneously. One thing is for sure, web related companies are busybusybusy, and the universal surge in momentum is real. And the rules have changed. People and the web have advanced. And this is the new beginning, a line has been drawn in the sand, this is the beginning of Web 2.0.

What exactly is WEb 2.0? That remains to be seen, but after our depressing economic winter that we just pulled through, I'm more than a little gun-shy of start-ups and vesting options. I think we're all a little wiser.

Whoever drew this feels that we're headed back into another dizzying dot.com experience. And seeing design firms hiring, bursting with work, and hearing the phrase "WEb 2.0" tells me it's time to buckle the seat belts - because here we go again!! Whoa.

The drawing is of a girl with spirals in her eyees saying, "WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HERE WE GO AGAIN RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

This photo was taken from Flickr of an Adaptive Path celebration of turning 5 years old yesterday. Congrat's to everyone there.

Tune in to Theory Radio!

Have you heard about Theory Radio? You should. Everyone's doing it, all the cool kids anyway. The internet radio station from the good people of Gigsville, and the inspiration for my diorama. Take a look at the schedule to see there are times when there's a real DJ, and other times it's the "Robo DJ". Music styles change often, but with a spin depending on the DJs mood and personality. For example, while typing this I've heard Nitrox play a "car" themed set with a rockin' surf guitar, Tom Waits, and a unusual 80's remix of Natalie Cole's "Pink Cadilac". The DJs encourage you to email or IM in requests, questions or shouts. In fact, BoogerX takes your questions and offers "good music and bad advice" (to be used for entertainment purposes only). It's wacky fun, check it out: Theory Radio

Theory Radio Diorama

Theroy Radio Diarama - 2.jpg
Originally uploaded by Superaverage.

You remember dioramas, we all made one in the thrid grade. Back then, I made a cowboy on a horse in a ranch - i don't reemember why. Last week I planned to go to Diorama Club over in the East Bay (aka OaktownBootyville). This event was obviously an attempt to foster our regression back toward childhood, and channel it into something more creative than our usual pattern of working, eating, drinking, etc. I decided that I would make a diorama of my experience listening to Theory Radio one night. If you haven't been listening, you should.

My diorama is of the DJ's and people present that night as I cracked up listening from the other side of the bridge. I carved apples for their heads, yams for boddies, ginger for arms, jelly beans for tecate cans, saltine crackers for the floors and wainscoating. Go to my flickr pix, to see additional pics of this.

Do computer games affect kids?

Posting this in case you haven't heard it before: "Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music." - Author may be unknown, or that quote was made by Kristian Wilson of Nintendo, Inc. in 1989

It's just too funny to think of: the reality could almost validate all those skittish parental warnings we heard as a kid...

About me

Running late to help a friend move, I stopped my bike to examine
discarded things beside the curb. It's Trash. It's Treasure. It's
Grassroots Recycling. More treasures than can be dreamed of... a hard
cover book with marginalia, wooden box of acrylics, boxing gloves
with the american flag on them, and dippy plants. I see countless
potential lives for everything. And then the rush of voices from
friends that have moved me, complaining about my abundant
peculiarities. Jim will forever tell others how he had to carry a box
of rocks down three floors, and then, up three floors. I'm damn
grateful to have friends like that. I concede that I have plenty of
actual junk. I decide to listen and not take everything that catches
my eye, but I cannot pass up the the beat-up plaster fertility
goddess. It's heavy, but it fits in my messenger bag. And I'm off again.
