The Second Dot.Coming

The dot com frenzy that gripped the world during the turn of the millineum flipped the world upside down. Start up businesses sprang up in every crevice possible. For some reason the majority had silly random names lbased on a formula of [Adjective]+[Noun] (i.e.: red gorilla, venture frogs, etc.) Thye all paid insane rents, offered killer benefits and salaries, and treatedclients with red carpet luxuries. And they could do this, because they were pulling more money than God. Well, nobody knew how it was goin to end. Some believed it had the potential to never end, those are the ones that lost everything. Others, were skeptics, or cautious, but most (I'm guessing) just went along with it until the "party" (as it was so often called) was over. That was me. It didn't last long. How could it. San Francisco being at the top of Silicone Valley, swelled with growth utill 40% of the city's economy was from the tech industry (or so I'm told). On average, other cities had 15% of their ecomony from the tech biz. So for SF, this meant a long long way to fall, and the "economic slowdown" aka the recession we are just pulling through was a significant Depression for SF. The crash was in 2001, and I'm still hearing of layoff's around the city in 2006.

But as far I can tell, it's here again. That's right, the dot comming are back. Depending on your perspective news like this might conjure up images of a terminal patient making an amazing recovery, or, ahem, of cockroaches that won't die. It's very possible that both cases are happening simultaneously. One thing is for sure, web related companies are busybusybusy, and the universal surge in momentum is real. And the rules have changed. People and the web have advanced. And this is the new beginning, a line has been drawn in the sand, this is the beginning of Web 2.0.

What exactly is WEb 2.0? That remains to be seen, but after our depressing economic winter that we just pulled through, I'm more than a little gun-shy of start-ups and vesting options. I think we're all a little wiser.

Whoever drew this feels that we're headed back into another dizzying dot.com experience. And seeing design firms hiring, bursting with work, and hearing the phrase "WEb 2.0" tells me it's time to buckle the seat belts - because here we go again!! Whoa.

Splat is a geek, a scientist, an interid explorer in the creative arts. Yoy should see some of his food photography. He's combined his love of cooking with photography and is making some amazing images. Seeing his strawberries here, I told him, "grasshopper make big hops". He replied, "gotta step it up, ya know". Have you heard about Theory Radio? You should. Everyone's doing it, all the cool kids anyway. The internet radio station from the good people of Gigsville, and the inspiration for my diorama. Take a look at the schedule to see there are times when there's a real DJ, and other times it's the "Robo DJ". Music styles change often, but with a spin depending on the DJs mood and personality. For example, while typing this I've heard Nitrox play a "car" themed set with a rockin' surf guitar, Tom Waits, and a unusual 80's remix of Natalie Cole's "Pink Cadilac". The DJs encourage you to email or IM in requests, questions or shouts. In fact, BoogerX takes your questions and offers "good music and bad advice" (to be used for entertainment purposes only).
